Accu-Steel Partner and EQIP Expert Spotlight: Justin Sprague

As the agricultural landscape continues to evolve, producers face the dual challenge of modernizing their operations while dealing with environmental concerns. The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) created the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) to help address these issues. EQIP is a voluntary Farm Bill program that provides financial and technical assistance to both support agricultural producers and encourage environmental stewardship.

This program provides an opportunity for farmers looking to implement sustainable practices – like building an Accu-Steel structure. However, navigating the complexities of EQIP can be daunting. That’s where private entities like ProAg Engineering come into play, providing essential support to help producers make the most of these incentive programs.

ProAg Engineering: A Valuable Resource

Justin Sprague, an engineering consultant with ProAg, is an expert in working with producers through the EQIP process. Based in Audubon, IA, ProAg specializes in agricultural engineering, focusing on livestock operations, natural resources, and conservation engineering. With extensive experience working on over 600 EQIP projects, ProAg has developed a deep understanding of the program’s intricacies, providing invaluable guidance to producers across state lines.

Justin stated, “EQIP is designed to support producers who want to modernize their operations or expand without incurring excessive labor or operational costs. It’s a great way to address environmental concerns through financial aid to help overcome capital investment and achieve a sustainable operation.”

This makes EQIP an excellent choice for many producers seeking to balance productivity with environmental stewardship.

Accu-Steel’s Role with EQIP

In order to meet environmental goals, EQIP has vigorous compliance requirements in place – and Accu-Steel’s high-quality structures fulfill all of them. Justin noted, “Not all buildings do, so that’s pretty special and unique.”

One example of an Accu-Steel building achieving EQIP objectives occurred in one of the many projects Justin played a part in, involving a producer who faced significant water runoff issues. The lot was adjacent to a creek, and every rainfall resulted in dirt washing into the waterway.

“Through the EQIP application process, the producer received funding to both construct an Accu-Steel cattle building and transform the lot into a grass pasture. This not only immediately eliminated the mud runoff but also significantly reduced odor complaints, improved the site’s air quality, and protected the cattle from weather elements,” said Justin.

By providing cost-effective solutions for livestock operations, Accu-Steel buildings not only help producers meet environmental goals, but protect livestock from extreme year-round weather – ultimately enhancing the resilience and efficiency of agricultural operations.

Advice for EQIP Application Process

While the benefits of EQIP are clear, navigating the application process can be intimidating – making ProAg a valuable resource. By fostering strong relationships with NRCS and local offices, ProAg helps keep producers engaged and informed, which is essential for the program’s success.

“Despite the red tape, it’s worth it,” Justin asserts. “We’re here to alleviate the headaches and guide producers through the application process, ensuring a smoother experience.”

Transparency is crucial in identifying issues that may need attention, allowing the NRCS to provide tailored technical and financial assistance. Justin encourages producers to be open about their operations when applying for EQIP: “NRCS is not an enforcement agency. They’re there to offer advice and help address problems that cannot be fixed on your own.”

Apply for EQIP

With the right support, navigating EQIP can lead to significant benefits for producers, both economically and environmentally. Accu-Steel resources, like ProAg, are dedicated to guiding producers through this process, ensuring they can modernize their operations while safeguarding natural resources. Together, a sustainable future for agriculture can be built—one Accu-Steel building at a time.
