The Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) is a voluntary Farm Bill program offered by the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) to both support agricultural producers and encourage environmental stewardship.
EQIP provides financial assistance to help offset the initial costs of implementing sustainable practices, such as constructing an Accu-Steel building. This investment contributes to long-term environmental sustainability by enabling farmers to adopt practices that benefit both their operations and the environment.
This program also provides tailored technical support in an effort to tackle natural resource challenges. The NRCS works together with producers to create unique, individual conservation plans to meet the desired goals – offering over 200 individual conservation practices for farms, ranches, and forests. Benefits of implementing this program include:
Accu-Steel cattle buildings are a cost-effective way to not only cover and protect your livestock from harsh weather conditions, but these structures also meet all EQIP requirements by achieving both immediate and long-term goals.
Austin and his wife manage a herd of 130 Semital and Red Angus cattle near Afton, IA. Each weaning season, they struggled with manure runoff caused by having to separate the calves into a half-acre concrete lot located on a hilltop. Every rainfall resulted in manure washing into waterways, contributing to both erosion and water quality issues.
Austin heard about EQIP through his trusted veterinarian, who had received EQIP funding for an Accu-Steel building himself. After going through the EQIP application process, Austin was awarded a contract to implement conservation practices – including the construction of an Accu-Steel cattle building.
By moving his calves into an Accu-Steel building, manure runoff was completely eliminated. An additional bonus – because of the building’s proven airflow, the weaning process didn’t need to be delayed due to extreme summer heat.
When asked what advice he’d give to fellow producers when it comes to EQIP, Austin said, “If you ever have the thought that anything like this is possible for your operation, do it. Without this program, I never would’ve been able to have this building on my own. If you have interest in expanding your operation, this is a great opportunity.”
This successful intervention not only protected waterways from sedimentation, but also improved the overall health of the land and livestock management. By participating in EQIP, agricultural producers can invest in sustainable solutions that yield long-term advantages for their operations and the environment.
